LEEDS GRAND YOUTH THEATRE (8 - 17 YEAR OLDS)
LEEDS GRAND YOUTH THEATRE (LGYT) – 2019/20
Following the government’s announcement on 16th March in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, LGYT is currently running online sessions via video call and not running sessions face-to-face until further notice.
The health and wellbeing of young people is of paramount importance to us. We will maintain contact with all LGYT members through digital means at this time.
New members are welcome to get in touch via the details below. We currently have space to join Group 1 for school years 4-6 (ages 8-11).
These are difficult times for everyone. We will continue to support our young members and staff throughout this period. Please all stay safe, support one another, and be kind to yourself as well as others.
- Learning Team, Leeds Grand Theatre & Opera House
“Not sure we can ever thank you enough, but you really have created a 'theatre family', where young people feel safe to shine.”
Youth Theatre participant parent
LGYT is a thriving, vibrant city centre youth theatre for young people aged 8-17. Our ethos focuses on nurturing the individual and learning the importance of working as an ensemble while building good skills and lasting friendships. Members develop performing arts skills through weekly term-time workshops in Leeds Grand Theatre Studio run by a professional director, choreographer, musical director, and other freelance visiting professionals throughout the year.
Our focus is on creatively challenging and supporting every single young person who comes through our doors (regardless of experience) and developing theatre skills (acting, dance/movement, physical theatre and vocal/singing training) and vital life skills (including confidence, communication, focus, empathy, commitment, initiative and creative problem-solving).
Since launching in January 2012, our cast of young performers have packed out City Varieties Music Hall and the Howard Assembly Room with eight full-scale musicals and a range of contemporary plays, devised works, and cabaret-style showcases.
“Awesome production of #WizardOfOz by phenomenal young artists. Family & friends came from Scotland and Manchester to see these guys last night & we loved it! Well done everyone”
Twitter audience feedback (July 2018)
“Saw a fabulous performance of #LittleShopofHorrors @CityVarieties So polished that I had to keep reminding myself that this was a youth theatre! Well done to all involved ”
